Nutrition Tip | Women's Health Week

Womens Health week last week allowed us an opportunity to think about some of the special needs and challenges for our female athletes, including those of a dietary nature.

Research has shown that dietary intake can change across the menstrual cycle. In particular during the mid luteal phase after ovulation, there appears to be a small increase in appetite and energy intake, from a mix of carbs, protein and fat. Put simply this equates to just a glass of regular milk.

And while many females will report cravings (think chocolate) at certain times of the month, these cravings are unlikely to be related to hormones specifically, and are more likely to be linked with the feel good factor that such foods can bring.

The take home message from all of this…listen to your body and make informed and mindful choices.
