Victorian high performance sport set to advance with funding boost

The Victorian Institute of Sport (VIS) welcomes the funding announcement made in the Victorian Budget 2021/22 which further strengthens our place at the heart of high performance sport in Victoria.

The funding includes an additional $24.5M over three years and is the first increase in funding since 2008, bringing the total funding to $44.6M over the next three years.

Chair of the VIS, Nataly Matijevic said "We are delighted that the Victorian Government has recognised the value of our elite training programs as well as the broader contribution the VIS makes in driving pride and inspiration in the Victorian community and through our community outreach and schools' programs".

"We particularly thank the Minister for Tourism, Sport and Major Events, Martin Pakula for his commitment and dedication to supporting the work of the VIS and Victorian athletes", she said.

The new funding will enable the VIS to support an additional 180 athletes, across 31 sports, further adding to our diversity and opportunities for talented young Victorians. CEO, Anne Marie Harrison also welcomed the funding and said, "the increased investment ensures that the VIS is able to enhance current sports programs and athlete support to drive development and performance outcomes and deliver our role in the National High Performance Sport Strategy".

"The Victorian Government announcement today will ensure the VIS continues to deliver world leading programs that further promote a positive, creative and innovative culture, one that develops high performing athletes who succeed in sport and life".

"We are also able to explore new programs and opportunities and kick starting the dreams of Victorian athletes, as they eye a possible Olympic and Paralympic Games in Brisbane in 2032," said Ms Harrison.

Dual Olympian and Victorian Institute of Sport scholarship holder Rowie Webster was thrilled to hear the news.

“Brilliant!– this is fantastic news for the Victorian Institute of Sport, and for sport across Victoria.

The additional funding will not only help athletes at the very top, but it will also help the next generation of emerging athletes at the beginning of their sporting careers. I’m excited to train alongside new athletes from different sports at the VIS.

I first started on scholarship in 2007, and the VIS has not only provided me with a facility to train at but has provided support for my mental and physical well-being, helping me to become the best athlete I can be.

On behalf of all the athletes at the VIS, thank you to Minister Pakula and the Victorian Government. We are thrilled and we will make all Victorians proud!”
