VIS athlete Penny Smith won the Women’s Trap event at the ISSF World Cup in Lahti, Finland overnight, and successfully secured an Olympic quota spot for Australia at the Tokyo Games next year.
The regional Victorian native looked focused and unstoppable in the final, shooting a comprehensive 45/50 targets to finish five shots clear of second.
“It is such a relief to get the second Women’s Trap quota for Australia. I believed in myself and took a positive attitude into the final, and I am really proud of my performance here in Finland!”
Shotgun National Team Coach Rich Sammon commented: “Penny’s placing today is well-deserved and a testament to the resilience and courage she has demonstrated in recent years.”
Fellow VIS athlete Laetisha Scanlan continued her consistent international season securing the bronze medal. She was thrilled to finish the season with another medal;
“To finish off this year’s World Cup season with a Bronze medal is fantastic. I’m so proud to win another medal for Australia!” said Scanlan.
Sammon added: “Another final and another medal for Laetisha to finish an incredible year. Her record of 7 of a possible 9 finals at this level is phenomenal.”
VIS athlete and Rio 2016 Olympic Gold Medallist Catherine Skinner showed her quality with a ninth-place finish in the Trap event, which was her first World Cup competition since early 2018.
The results in Finland clearly showcased Australia's depth in the Women's Trap event with three athletes inside the top 10.
