Hockeyroos claim bronze at Tokyo test event

The Hockeyroos, headlined by VIS athletes Rachael Lynch. Krissy Bates, Sophie Taylor and Amy Lawton, finished with the bronze medal at the Olympic test event at Tokyo.

After going through their first three matches of the tournament without a win, the Roos saved their best performance for last by defeating China 3-1 on Wednesday at the Oi Hockey Stadium.

Kalindi Commerford, Rosie Malone and Savannah Fitzpatrick all found the back of the net in open play to secure the two-goal victory at the Japanese capital.

The tournament was a little disappointing performance-wise for the Hockeyroos, but it was good for the team to get an insight into the temperatures and also the science behind the heat to get an idea of how each player reacts what strategies individuals will need to utilise at the Olympics next year.

India won both the men’s and women’s finals, but the main purpose of the event was to test the operations being put in place for next year, as well as the facilities. Post event, the International Hockey Federation claimed one of the greatest learnings was that the newly-built Oi Hockey Stadium "brilliantly passed the test" and earned unanimous praise from teams and officials.
