VIS athletes bring home 7 of 10 Uni Games medals!

VIS athletes have wowed with performances at the World University Games in Napoli Italy, with Victorian Institute of Sport athletes bringing home 7 of Australia’s 10 Track and Field medals!

In the women’s 800m final, Catriona Bisset brought home gold in a time of 2:01.20, while team mate Morgan Mitchell finished in 8th with a run of 2:04.14.

Mitchell also competed in the women’s 4 x 400m relay, finishing in third place in the final.

Jemima Montag was busy with her performances in the women’s 20km team walk and individual events. A solid effort in the team event saw the ladies bring home gold with an overall time of 4:51:36. While in the individual event, Montag grabbed silver with a time of 1:33:57.

In the women’s 4 x 100m, Celeste Mucci helped the team to a second place finish with a time of 43.97 seconds. Mucci also had strong performances in the 100m sprint and 100m hurdles, finishing in 16th and 20th respectively. 

Over in the women’s 1500m final, Georgia Griffith dominated to finish in second place overall with a time of 4:09.89, while fellow VIS athlete Georgia Hansen finished 10th in 4:21.89. 

In the men’s long jump, Darcy Roper and Chris Mitrevski once again battled it out with Roper taking the bronze with a leap of 7.90m and Mitrevski taking 5th place, just behind his team mate with a distance of 7.84m.

In Lucerne, Switzerland, VIS long jumper Henry Smith recently competed at the Spitzen Leichtathletik Luzern annual track and field event. Smith finished 5th in the men’s long jump with a distance of 7.74m.

At the 30th International Athletics Meeting event in Lignano Italy, Brooke Stratton finished in 2nd place in the women’s long jump with a distance of 6.51m. Jordy Williams also competed in the men’s 1500m, finishing 9th in a time of 3:44.89. 

Back home, in the Summer Down Under Queensland winter series, Damien Birkinhead won gold in the shot put with a 19.52m throw. While distance runner Jaryd Clifford competed in the Athletics Victoria Lakeside 10km Road Race over the weekend, finishing in 8th place with a time of 29:43.94.
