Tapper secures Tokyo quota

Victorian Institute of Sport’s Melissa Tapper secured Australia a spot in the Para-table tennis team for the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics when she won gold at the Arafura Games last weekend.

Tapper, Australia’s only athlete to compete at both the Paralympic and Olympics Games, cruised to victory, defeating fellow Australian Andre McDonnell in a straight set victory (11-1, 12-10, 11-3).

The VIS table tennis player said her victory was a relief.

“I’m stoked and quite relieved to have gotten through after quite a hectic schedule,” Tapper said about coming straight to Darwin from the able-bodied World Championships.

“There was quite a bit at stake for the team, and everyone did their best to try and get over the line.”
