Cycling Review: Commonwealth Games

Summary…

Kell O’Brien and the men’s 4000m team pursuit won gold for Australia in spectacular fashion setting a new world record.

A tactical move by Australia saw the VIS scholarship left out of the qualifying round and then coming in for Kerby in the final.

The move proved to be successful as Australia went on to ride 3 minutes 49.805 seconds, shaving off nearly half a second from the world record set in Rio two years ago.

In other VIS cycling news from the Commonwealth Games, sprint cyclist Jacob Schmidt won bronze medals in the men’s team sprint as well as the individual sprint.

Jess Gallagher and Maddie Janssen also had a very positive Commonwealth Games campaign putting together two runner-up performances in the women’s B&VI 4KM – in which they were world record holders (even if it was only for 5 minutes before the English riders broke it next heat) and B&VI 1000m Time Trial.

The number…

3:49.804… This is the new Wold record time set by Australia in the men’s 4km team pursuit, smashing the previous mark of 3:50.265 seconds set by Great Britain at the Rio Olympics.

All results…

Men’s 4km Team Pursuit (Kell O’Brien): GOLD

Kell O’Brien Individual 4km Pursuit: 7TH

Kell O’Brien 40km Points Race: 8TH
