The VIS cycling athletes had a very positive 2018 UCI Para-cycling Track World Championship campaign in Rio, which included a World Record to Emily Petricola.
Petricola recorded a time of 3 minutes 54.501 seconds in the Women’s C4 3km Individual Pursuit heats, making her the new World Record holder.
Unfortunately she wasn’t able to reproduce the same time in the final and had to settle for Silver.
Petricola’s impressive efforts did not stop there, she also claimed Bronze in the 500m time trial, capping off her first World Championships.
Fellow VIS scholarship holders Jess Gallagher and Maddie Janssen also joined in on the podium collecting two Silver medals in their World Championship campaign.
Gallagher and Janssen came second in the Tandem 1km time trial and also in the 200m Sprint. They now look towards the Commonwealth Games in April.
"We are really happy with our results and our two silver medals," Gallagher said.
"A personal best in our flying 200m and just outside our one kilmetre time trial personal gives us great momentum as we head straight into GC2018."
"We have a few areas we can improve on and we are incredibly excited to head home and race on home soil."
Alistair Donohue just missed out on the medal ride in the 4km Individual Pursuit, qualifying in 5th position by 0.6 of a second. The following day, his narrow loss fuelled his impressive effort in the Men’s C4-C5 scratch race, where he placed second and brought home a silver medal.
