VIS cyclists strike gold

VIS scholarship holders have put up some outstanding results at the Victorian State Sprint and Individual Pursuit Championships at the Darebin International Sports Centre over the weekend.

Sam de Riter took home gold in the Elite Women’s Individual Pursuit (3:35.541), finishing nearly ten seconds in front of fellow VIS scholarship holder, Ruby Roseman-Gannon who finished in 2nd place (3:44.122).

The VIS athletes nearly took a clean sweep of titles in the Men’s Elite category, with Riley Hart finishing 1st, ahead of Alistair Donohoe (2nd), and Isaac Buckell (4th).

Jensen Plowright claimed gold in the Junior Men’s U19 Individual Pursuit while Alice Culling took home 1st in the Junior Women’s U19 IP, closely followed by fellow VIS athlete Ashlee Jones.

Tylah Meunier was the sole place getter for the VIS in the Elite Sprints, finishing 1st in both the final heats in the Elite Men’s category.

Off the track, Carol Cooke has been named the Female Para Cyclist of the Year at the Cycling Australia awards on Friday night.

The award follows a successful 2017 season for Cooke that saw her reclaim her dual World Championship title in the Road Race and Time Trial in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa.

VIS scholarship holder, Lucas Hamilton, was awarded the U23 Cyclist of the Year award reflecting his breakout 2017 season.

Over the European season Hamilton claimed a tour victory at the Tour of Alsace, an Oceania road race title, a string of one-day podiums and a stage and second overall at the U23 Giro d’Italia. Adding to his success, Hamilton recently signed a professional contract with Orica-Scott.
