Seven straight for Hockeyroos

The Hockeyroos have secured their seventh Oceania Cup title defeating trans-tasman rivals and Olympic champions, New Zealand, 2-0 at Sydney Olympic Park on Sunday.

VIS athlete, Kristina Bates, was integral in securing the win for the Australians, scoring with barely a second left in the first half to take the Hockeyroos to 2-0 at the main break.

VIS scholarship holders, Madi Ratcliffe and Rachel Lynch also took to the pitch, with goalkeeper Lynch stopping all New Zealand efforts to tie up the scores in the second half.

Post-match, Bates said that scoring just before the half put the team in a good spot.

“It’s an amazing feeling. The Kiwis have had it over us the last couple of tournaments so it’s really good to get the win today.” Bates said.

“It puts us in a good spot heading into the Commonwealth Games next year. It’s a good result for us.”
