Hamilton storms to fourth

Lucas Hamilton has wrapped up a successful Tour de l’Avenir campaign, walking away with 4th overall and a win for the Australian U23 Men’s Team in the team classification.

The VIS scholarship holder made his move late in the tour, waiting until the latter stages and the tough uphill finishes to make an impact. Hamilton finished 4th, 5th and 7th in the final three stages, respectively to secure himself a 4th place finish overall in the general classification.

Australian U23 teammates, Michael Storer and Jai Hindley, backed him up in the general classification, finishing 9th and 10th.

The Tour de l’Avenir, or ‘Tour of the future’ is the biggest race in the U23 racing calendar and is often seen as an indicator of future potential for many cyclists in the pro ranks.

Meanwhile in Italy, Isaac Buckell and Godfrey Slattery have taken home bronze at the UCI Track World Championships over the weekend.

Holding a two-point lead at the halfway mark of the race, it was clear Buckell and Slattery were going to have to give this race everything they had.

A three-way race for the lead with Denmark and Russia, saw Denmark push ahead to lap the bunch, leaving Australia and Russia to battle it out in the final sprint for silver and bronze. Despite finishing second in the final sprint, it wasn’t enough, with Russia sitting on 25 points and Australia’s on 23 at the end of the race, leaving the Australians to take bronze.
