Watson wins Sharelle McMahon medal

Liz Watson has topped off a standout season, winning the prestigious Sharelle McMahon medal.

Only weeks after being awarded the rebel Young Star award, Watson was named as the MVP for the Melbourne Vixens on Friday night.

Throughout the season Watson was a key player in the Vixens midcourt, leading the league for goal assists with 288 and third in centre pass receives.

Watson finished the count with 54 votes. Emily Mannix was announced runner-up MVP with 44 votes.

The evening also saw a number of other awards announced, including Khao Watts awarded the Coach’s Award, Chloe Watson awarded The Excellence in Sport & Life Award and Jo Weston awarded Player of the Finals.

VIS physiotherapist, Heidi Pollington, was awarded the Outstanding Service Award for her contribution to the Melbourne Vixens as Head Physio.

Four of the Melbourne Vixens starting seven have been named in the Suncorp Super Netball Team of the Year at the Australian Netball Awards over the weekend.

Liz Watson, Mwai Kumwenda, Tegan Philip and Jo Weston were all named in the Team of the Year award, with Sunshine Coast Lightning stars Geva Mentor and Laura Langman, as well as Firebirds captain Gabi Simpson rounding out the seven.

Melbourne Vixens coach Simone McKinnis was also awarded the Joyce Brown Coach of the Year at the ceremony after a stunning season in which she led the Melbourne Vixens to the Super Netball minor premiership.

“I thoroughly enjoyed the year. I had a really great group of girls that worked exceptionally hard throughout the year, they took it all on, went for it and we had good fun along the way, winning some games.” McKinnis said.

The Melbourne Vixens team now turn their focus towards the international competition, with the Australian Diamonds selection set to be announced on Tuesday 27th June.
