World Champs in sight for Robinson & Mitchell

In form distance runner Brett Robinson has secured a berth on the Australian team for the World Cross Country Championships to be held in Uganda in March.

The VIS scholarship holder has won the 10 kilometre event at Mt Stromlo in 29 minutes and 42 seconds edging out Tasmanian Stewart Mc Sweyn by a mere three seconds.

Robinson finished 14th in the 5000 metres at Rio and that form carried him to four wins in races after the Olympics.

Meantime fellow Olympian Morgan Mitchell has recorded a World Championships qualifying time at the Hunter Track Classic in Newcastle. Stopping the clock at 51.96 seconds, Mitchell ran away from the field coming into the home straight.

We know its “early days” but this is the quickest women’s 400 metre time for 2017 in the world.

Mitchell said afterwards “It’s a relief as well to tick that box and get it out of the way [world championship qualifier], my coach can breathe now and I’m loving it. I’d like to reach the stage where I don’t have to think about it at all and it just comes, but I’m still growing as an athlete so it’s always going to be in the back of my mind.”

The world cross country championships will be held in Kampala on 26 March while the Track & Field World Championships will be in London from August 4-13
