Positive start for Vikings & Vipers

The Victorian Vipers and Viking hockey teams have enjoyed positive starts to their 2016 Australian Hockey League campaigns in Perth.

Day 1

The Vipers defeated the Northern Territory Pearls 3-0. Hannah Gravenall scored the first with a sneaky field goal, with Danielle Schubach nailing two penalty corners. While in the men’s competition, the Vikings convincingly defeated the Northern Territory 5-1. Dual Olympian Ciriello scored two penalty corners, Josh Simmonds and Glenn Simpson both scored from penalty corners, while Aaron Kleinschmidt scored a field goal.

Day 2

The Vipers defeated New South Wales convincingly, with Georgia Nanscawen starting the Vipers off, and Emily Hurtz following up with two of her own. While the Vikings were defeated by New South Wales, with goals from Kookaburra Simon Orchard along with Landon Morley, with Victoria’s goal a penalty corner from Josh Simmonds.

Day 3

The Vipers were defeated by South Australia 3-1, with Laura Barden scoring a field goal for the Vipers in the first quarter.

Day 4

The Vikings upset reigning champions Queensland 4-3. Queensland were on the defensive for the duration of the match, trailing Victoria from the first quarter thanks to two goals from James Knee and Chris Ciriello.
