Golden double for Cooke

Carol Cooke is the toast of the Australian Paralympics team after becoming the first Aussie athlete to win two individual gold medals in Rio.

The 55 year old took out the women’s road race, having already claimed gold in the T2 road time trial earlier in the week.

Cooke broke away from the pack with around 5km to go in the 30km road course, and was never in danger of being caught as she won by a comfortable 17 seconds.

The Canadian-born champion has lived with multiple sclerosis since 1998 and is a strong spokeswoman for those who also have the condition.

Cooke, who also won gold in London four years ago competing against men in a mixed road time trial, dedicated her stunning performances to the memory of her father, “My Dad passed away this year, and he was with me this week, definitely,” she said.
