Aussies keep quarter-final hopes alive

The Australian men's water polo team will not progress to the quarter finals of the Olympic competition in Rio.

The Sharks will be haunted by their 8-7 defeat to the host nation in their opening game, which ultimately wrecked their chances of winning their first Olympic medal.

The Australians blew big guns Greece out of the water in their final pool game, winning 12-7, but needed other results to go their way to advance to the quarters.

Brazil needed to beat Hungary by at least two goals or failing that Australia required an unlikely upset victory by winless Japan over world No.1 Serbia. Neither happened and Hungary climbed above Australia into the final play-off position.

The Australian women’s team is back in action tomorrow in a quarter-final clash with Hungary. Australia has beaten Hungary in the bronze medal match at the past two Olympics.
