Kookas sent packing

The world No.1 Australian men's hockey team have been sent packing early from the Rio Games, with the Aussies embarrassed 4-0 by the Netherlands in the quarter-final.

Australia made a disastrous start, conceding a goal on 49 seconds when Billy Bakker hit the back of the net after a sloppy turnover.

It was all catch-up hockey from that point for Australia, and the world No.2 Dutch doubled their lead shortly before halftime when Bob de Voogd pounced on a loose ball close to goal.

Valentine Verga extended the lead in the third quarter before Mink van der Weerden completed the rout in the final term as the Dutch outclassed the Australians.

The loss in Rio ends the Kookaburras' streak of winning a medal at six consecutive Olympics.
