Finals berth beyond reach

A fairy tale finals berth wasn't to be for debutants and seasoned performers.

400m semi-final

The fairy tale finals berth wasn't to be for Morgan Mitchell, placing 8th in her semi-final in a time of 52.68. It has been a breakout season to date, Mitchell is proud of her efforts who is eager to regroup to produce bigger and better results in the years to come, "There's a lot of planning to do, but hopefully next year I'll be fitter and stronger" Mitchell said.

1500m semi final

A very slow first 200m ensured a sit and kick semi-final with the field eyeing off a top five finish to automatically qualify for the final. Known for hugging the rail, Zoe Buckman did just that in the early stages. Disappointed she couldn't find another gear when it matter, a competitive performance from Buckman to finish 9th in 4:06.95 (15th overall). Buckman makes credit to the depth Australia currently has in women's middle distance running, "We’ve been driving each other since the start of the domestic season. It’s really good that the bars been raised in Australia really glad I have that competition".

High Jump

20 year old Joel Baden, didn't have his greatest day on the big stage. In his Olympic Games debut, Baden cleared 2.17m in the men’s high jump competition, but was eliminated at 2.22m in qualifying.

Marathon

In far from ideal marathon conditions, the Brazilian heat and humidity had a major impact on the race tempo. Super-mum Lisa Weightman has made her third Olympic marathon appearance, finishing 31st (2:34:41), after placing 33rd at Beijing 2008 and 17th at London 2012.
