Soccer duo Brazil-bound

VIS athletes Lisa de Vanna and Stephanie Catley are heading to Brazil after the final women’s football squad was announced today.

Australian captain Lisa de Vanna will head to Rio as the only player in the side with Olympic experience having competed at the 2004 Athens Olympics where Australia finished fifth. At just 19, De Vanna came off the bench in all four matches and despite scoring in Australia’s quarter final clash against Sweden her side went down 1-2 to be knocked out of the competition.

Since the Athens Games, the pacy forward has played club football around the world and been a consistent presence in the Australia side.

Meanwhile, with four years of international experience already under her belt, 22 year old defender Steph Catley will make her Olympic debut at Rio having been one of the side’s most consistent performers in recent years.
