The big question for people involved in sporting careers is “What happens after I finish my tenure in sport?”

In sporting terms, you have your day in the sun and the sun shines brightly on you, and then the clouds come over in age, injury or form, and then it’s all over!

This is the dilemma facing a lot of sports people. So, what preparation can an athlete undertake to better prepare them for their transition out of sport?

· Determine a range of careers after sport

· Review your educational qualifications

· Identify a mentor to support your ideas about future work options

· Find time during your sporting tenure to assess and develop future work options

· Balance your sport and personal time to undertake educational studies

· Monitor your physical and psychological awareness of yourself.

· Always seek feedback from your colleagues about your work preparation

The more preparation undertaken during your sporting career on future work options, the greater the likelihood of a positive outcome.
