Personal Excellence Leadership Program

2016 VIS Personal Excellence Leadership Program: Reflections from Regan Lamble (Athletics)

The VIS Leadership Program gave a small group of athletes the opportunity to dissect the role of leadership and to challenge our preconceptions of what leadership means.

Composed of athletes from a wide variety of sports and backgrounds, the program provided a great forum for thought provoking discussion, with a fusion of different experiences and opinions. A new leadership theme was covered each week, with topics ranging from ethical issues to daily decision making problems, which encouraged athletes to reflect on their own values, beliefs and social awareness. Whilst many of these leadership topics were discussed against the backdrop of sport, athletes were encouraged to consider leadership in the context of day-to-day life and to consider the ways in which we can all be better people in society.

Various group activities and challenges meant that comfort zones were left behind, but many new friends were made and many laughs were had. The six-week program culminated in a great presentation evening held at 776BC headquarters, where our new skills could be put to use and our new understandings about leadership were consolidated with some wonderful reflections.
