Montag completes the three-peat as Victorians claim six medals on Day 9

By Victorian Institute of Sport

August 2, 2026

Saturday, 1 August was the richest medal day yet for VIS-supported athletes, with Jemima Montag completing a three-peat in the women’s 10,000m race walk and Abbey Caldwell claiming gold in the women’s one mile, part of a six-medal haul that also included silver for Jacob Cassar, Jessica Gallagher and Aoife Coughlan, and bronze for Rebecca Henderson, Brooke Buschkuehl and Claudia Hollingsworth.

Montag claimed her third consecutive Commonwealth Games gold in the women’s 10,000m race walk, stopping the clock in 42:13.40 after a dominant final kilometre to set a Games record and a new personal best. Henderson completed an Australian podium sweep in the event, claiming bronze.

Caldwell claimed gold in the women’s one mile with a brilliant performance, going one better than her bronze in Birmingham to lead an Australian podium sweep. Hollingsworth claimed bronze in the same race, finishing behind fellow Australian Jessica Hull in silver and Caldwell in gold.

Cassar capped off a remarkable debut Commonwealth Games, claiming silver in the men’s 65kg boxing final. He battled his way to the gold medal bout with wins over New Zealand, Canada and Lesotho, securing his place on the podium in his first Games appearance.

Gallagher added a second silver to her Glasgow 2026 campaign, claiming silver in the women’s tandem B 1000m time trial. It backs up her earlier silver in the tandem B sprint and continues an outstanding cycling campaign on the Glasgow velodrome.

Coughlan claimed silver in the women’s minus 70kg judo, battling through the draw to reach the gold medal bout and secure another Australian podium finish.

Buschkuehl added bronze in the women’s long jump, producing a series of strong jumps under pressure to secure her place on the podium in a tightly contested competition.

There was plenty more for VIS-supported athletes across the day. Thomas Reynolds finished fifth in the men’s 400m final. Peter Bol finished seventh in the men’s 800m final, Seth O’Donnell 16th in the men’s 5000m final, and Adam Spencer eighth in the men’s one mile final. Cooper Sherman and the mixed 4x400m relay team were disqualified from their final following a lane infringement. Blake Agnoletto qualified for the men’s 10km scratch race final, finishing fifth. Alyssa Polites finished 12th in the women’s 25km points race final. In judo, Maeve Coughlan lost her women’s minus 63kg quarter-final to Riba Kabinda.

In netball, the Australian Diamonds’ campaign hit a setback in the semi-finals, going down to Jamaica in an upset result that sends the world number one ranked team into the bronze medal match against England.
