Victorian Institute of Sport’s veteran aerialist Laura Peel won her first FIS Freestyle World Cup gold medals since 2012 over the weekend with her performance in China at Shimao Lotus Mountain Resort.
The VIS aerial skier topped the podium on day one of back-to-back competitions at the season finale of the 2019/19 FIS Freestyle Ski Aerials World Cup, Peel did one better on her second-place result from two weeks ago in Moscow and scored her career’s second World Cup win, and her first in more than seven years.
Peel, who has had a mixed season to date, went all or nothing in the final phase of the competition and flawlessly executed her back full, double full for a score of 96.58 points.
“I couldn’t be happier with how today went,” she said.
“We had some really tricky conditions with the temperature in double digits, and some swirling winds.”
"I'm very grateful to my coaches for getting my speed right on all my jumps and super stoked I was able to put all my jumps down,” she said.
This victory completed her 2019 season, finishing in third place in the overall standings in the Ladies Aerials discipline.
