Rising Roper too good
Monday, 11 February 2019
The men’s long jump competition at the ACT Championships on Saturday witnessed the progression of rising VIS star Darcy Roper, jumping 8.20m with a 2.1m/s wind to topple training partner Henry Smith.
Going into the final round the Victorian Institute of Sport scholarship holder led his training partner Smith, 7.99m to 7.76m. Smith, on his final attempt, leapt 8.06m (1.4m/s) to put the pressure back on Roper to respond. He sure did, leaping 8.20m to win the gold medal.
Fellow VIS long jumper, Chris Mitrevski, was third with a jump of 7.70m.
Meanwhile over in Adelaide a world-class line up at the Oceania and Australia Race-Walking Championships began at War Memorial Drive, which included VIS’ Jemima Montag.
Montag set the pace with Colombian Sandra Lorenas and Queenslander Katie Hayward in the Women’s 20km race, remaining together until the 16km mark.
However, the Colombian proved too strong and broke away to take the win (1:28.49), with Hayward in second (1:29.25) and VIS’ Montag crossing the line in third (1:30.51).
