VIS’ India Robinson has claimed her maiden World Surf League Qualifying Series win at the Phillip Island Pro yesterday, beating Sophia Fulton in a perfect surf at the Penguin Parade.
The Victorian Institute of Sport surfer was in blistering form all event consistently scoring impressive range on the speedy right hand waves on offer.
After starting the year with a quarter final finish at the highly rated Florida Pro, Robinson set her sights on an event win and was able to nail it in her home state in front of family and friends and she couldn’t be happier.
“I’m so excited and overwhelmed,” she said.
"It’s incredible to win so close to home and be staying with close friends on Phillip Island. The support I got was amazing. I'm looking forward to competing at Port Stephens next week and have a lot more confidence after this heat win."
Robinson amassed a heat total of 18.05 (out of a possible 20) in the opening half of the heat, making the task of beating her close to impossible.
The win means that Robinson will now move two spots up the World Surf League QS rankings to 24 going into the final event of the season at Port Stephens.
Fellow VIS surfer, Xavier Huxtable, made it to the second round in the men’s division.
