Hockeyroos finish fourth in World Cup

Monday, 06 August 2018

The Hockeyroos 2018 Women’s World Cup campaign has come to a close, finishing an impressive fourth after suffering a 3-1 loss to Spain in the bronze medal match in London on Sunday.

Australia has missed out on a World Cup finals birth after a heartbreaking shootout loss to the number one ranked Netherlands a day earlier and didn’t appear to recover from that disappointment.

Currently ranked 11th in the world, Spain had nothing to lose and raced to an early two-goal lead via Mario Lopez (11’) and Berta Bonastre (14’).

But the Hockeyroos responded with a goal of their own in the 40th minute when Victorian Institute of Sport’s Emily Hurtz passed to Captain Emily Smith whose lobbed shot was goal-bound, with Slattery making sure of it.

However, the Spanish attacker, Magaz sent Australia packing in the 51st minute securing her country the Bronze medal position.

Australia 1 (Slattery 40’)
Spain 3 (Lopez 11’, Bonastre 14’, Magaz 51’)

VIS Hockeyroos: Kristina Bates, Emily Hurtz, Lily Brazel and Rachael Lynch.
