Boxing Review: Commonwealth Games

Monday, 16 April 2018

Summary…

VIS boxer Jason Whateley avoided qualifying rounds to go straight into the finals, but fell over at the final hurdle against Kiwi David Nyika to claim the silver medal.

Whateley went straight to the Quarterfinal round and defeated Northern Island’s Damien Sullivan convincingly (4-1). He then cruised through the Semi-final (4-0) to find himself in the gold medal match against Commonwealth Games title holder Nyika.

Whateley avoided a knockout but couldn’t recover on points, with Nyika awarded a unanimous decision and the gold medal. Whateley still walks away with Commonwealth silver and motivation for redemption.
