Kathryn Mitchell sets new Australian record
Monday, 12 February 2018
VIS athlete, Kathryn Mitchell, has set a new Australian record in the women’s javelin of 67.58m at Athletics Victoria throwers meet in Ringwood on Sunday.
Only two weeks ago, Mitchell opened her season with a mark 10 cm shy of Kim Mickle’s previous Australian record of 66.83 m. The record has been in Mitchell’s sights for some time and the 35-yr-old is thrilled to have finally surpassed it.
“It has been on my list for a long, long time and I have been working away at achieving it, however I didn’t expect it today,” said Mitchell.
“I’ve been putting processes in place to achieve this.”
Days out from the 2018 Australian Athletics Championships & Commonwealth Games Trials on the Gold Coast, Mitchell will be the favourite to gain selection for her fourth Commonwealth Games, with the women’s javelin final taking place on Saturday evening.
In other VIS athletics news, Luke Mathews has won back-to-back Victorian Mile Championships, crossing the line in 4:00.6 at Melbourne University last week.
